Global Volunteers

HIV testing (55K) YEI volunteers from all over the world have made a tremendous impact on the lives of children and youth in Kasese District.

We recruit global volunteers according to project needs and the specific skills required.

Global volunteers can either choose to contribute as on-site volunteers in Kasese or as remote volunteers from their home country.

Since 2004, more than 50 global volunteers have contributed their skills and expertise to the YEI mission by either working on-site with our local members, or remotely from their home countries. YEI volunteers come from diverse backgrounds and have included college students looking to gain more community experience in a rural setting and experienced professionals hoping to better understand project design and implementation in developing countries. Fill out our volunteer application form to receive more information and learn how you can contribute to YEI.

On-site Volunteers

Volunteers are admitted on a rolling basis and are welcome to apply at any time.

As a volunteer, you decide how long you would like to stay. Our on-site global volunteers come as individuals or in groups to Kasese District, Uganda.

They are then deployed in our several community activities and work side-by-side with our local community volunteers to implement core programs serving vulnerable children and youth. Most of our on-site volunteers have been involved in HIV/AIDS prevention and care trainings for youth leaders, HIV sensitization in schools, providing psychological orientation to destitute children, condom education and distribution in the community and sharing testimonials on radio.

Volunteers have come from all over the world, including Argentina, Denmark, Sweden, Taiwan, United Kingdom, United States and Zambia. Some of our onsite volunteers continue to promote YEI beyond their volunteer experience.

Ms. Msonda-Mhelela from Zambia who volunteered with YEI in 2005 for example, chose to become a registered member and continues to represent YEI in global forums. Ms. Joan, who lives in the UK also works as a volunteer monitoring and evaluation (M&E) consultant and manages the Kambasu Trust Fund. Mr.

Tim Rosta and Mr. Pailo Heitz from the United States volunteered with YEI for just a few days in 2009, but have continued to provide support to the organization through volunteer referrals, program design and funding support. YEI also has working partnerships with two global volunteer organisations,

AbroaderView Volunteers from the USA and GapYear, Italy.

Remote Volunteers

HIV testing (55K)Remote volunteers work from their home country and are as valuable to fulfilling the YEI mission as our on-site volunteers.

These volunteers take advantage of access to a wealth of resources and communication tools made available online to help YEI with fundraising campaigns, grant research and applications, proposal design and advocacy.

Many of our remote volunteers have proposed programs that we could not have developed on our own, but have since been implemented by on-the-ground local volunteer members.

Similar to our on-site volunteers, remote volunteers are admitted on a rolling basis and are welcome to apply at any time. As a remote volunteer, we'll try to match our needs with your interests, skills and availability.

We just ask that you provide us with periodic updates on the projects you decide to pursue. YEI will accommodate your schedule to maximize your learning and contribution to the project during your volunteer experience. To learn more about how you can contribute as a remote volunteer, please fill out our volunteer application form.

My volunteer experience with YEI was a dream come true. I had heard a lot about Africa and the HIV situation there. Volunteering with YEI gave me the opportunity to witness everything firsthand and make my contribution in improving the lives of the poorest. I worked alongside young people living with HIV/AIDS, witnessed the suffering of child orphans, interacted with drug addicts and observed the squalid conditions of living in abject poverty. The most interesting part was that I had the opportunity to make my contribution. I worked with a very interesting volunteer team, worked with great flexibility, received guidance at every turn and learned lots of new things. Yes, it was an experience of a lifetime!

Global Volunteer from Northern Ireland.
